Lukashenka’s bagman may face up to 7 years in jail


Yury Chyzh, one of the country’s most influential businessmen and so-called Lukashenka’s bagman, was arrested on March,11 by the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB).

Mr Chyzh, the owner of Triple group of companies, has beeen charged with commission of an offense under Part 2 of Article 243 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (evasion of taxes and duties on a large scale).

In accordance with the article, the businessman is facing a jail sentence of up to five years or  imprisonment of up to seven years, with or without confiscation of property, with or without deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions or engage in certain activities.

The level of estriction has not changed – Yury Chyzh is being held in custody, KGB spokesman Dzmitry Pabyarzhyn told news agency BelaPAN.

The Committee claims that Chyzh ordered to establish a front company which was later caught in committing financial crimes, in particular, money laundering.

“By the order of Chyzh, one created a company which was never supposed to be engaged in any financial and economic activities,” Valery Vakulchyk, the chairman of the Belarusian State Security Committee, told journalists on March, 15.

It is not the only crime Chyzh is involved in, the KGB states.
