Short of funds? Lukashenka hints at reducing number of security officials

Belarusian president Alyaksandr Lukashenka has decided to ‘optimize’ the work of national security agencies.

It is of importance to learn whether the system can promptly respond to today’s threats and whether the proper bodies are prepared for ‘all kinds of scenarios’, the Belarusian leader said at the session to discuss the development of national security agencies on Tuesday.

According to the president, there is also a crucial need to optimize resources and funds which are being used in this field.

“We are not rich enough to keep an excessive number of law enforcement staff. At the same time, one should not oversimplify the system either. Otherwise we may downsize it to the point where it is fit for nothing,” Lukashenka said.

More cost-effective means of solving existing issues and higher quality are needed, the head of state stressed.

“It is necessary to get rid of excessive and sometimes artificial functions, including supervisory ones, prevent the duplication of certain functions of different agencies,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka as saying.

“You must carry out inspections only if you do have any substantial evidence. I will pay special attention to it! And God forbid that you start inspect some business and leave it empty-handed,” the president warned.
