Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Petro Poroshenko have paid tribute to the memory of the Chernobyl clean-up workers on the day of the 31st anniversary of the nuclear disaster.

The Belarusian president arrived in the town of Chornobyl in Ukraine’s Kyiv region on Wednesday. Petro Poroshenko greeted him upon arrival. The leaders laid flowers to The Wall of Memory in the Memorial to the Heroes of Chernobyl.

During the meeting, Alyaksandr Lukashenka assured his Ukrainian counterpart that Belarus would do its best to secure peace in Ukraine.

“Peace, peace and only peace. Ukrainians have never been strangers for Belarusians. We are family. We can come to you on a tractor and help till the land if necessary. You help us and our countrymen help you. We will work for the sake of peace. We have no other goal,” he stressed.

According to Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine highly appreciates friendship and cooperation with Belarus.

“I have been firmly reassured by the President of Belarus that no one will ever embroil Belarus in a war against Ukraine,” he said.

As the sides do have issues to discuss, negotiations are expected to take place in the territory of Belarus.
