Lukashenka signs Culture Code

The State has legally consolidated its control in the sphere of culture.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka has signed the Culture Code passed by the House of Representatives and approved by the Board of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

At the time, the code was inspired by a former Culture Minister and current ambassador of Belarus to France Paval Latushka.

The Code includes 257 articles regulating all aspects of cultural life in the country – from the rights and obligations of amateur art groups to the very notion of “creativity”.

Thus the provision 14 of Article 237 regulates the discotheques and obliges those who decide to suddenly organize dances to coordinate them with the authorities.

“Legal entities and individual entrepreneurs that organize ad hoc discos have to get their activities approved by the head of the relevant local executive and administrative body or a person authorized by him for five days before its implementation. It is done to prevent emergencies and maintain law and order,” the law says.

According to the Pravo.by, the Code is unique in its nature.

The Code will enter into force six months after its official publication.
