President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has thanked the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) for their successful corruption therapy and stressed that chekists should not be ashamed of their history.

“I want to thank you for your anti-corruption work; this responsibility is not solely yours. But no agency has made so much headway in this field as the KGB, especially when solving grievous corruption crimes,” he said after listening out a report by KGB Chief Valery Vakulchyk.

Lukashenka is unhappy about other law enforcement agencies’ not being so efficient.

“You [KGB officers] cooperate with the Prosecutor’s Office, the Interior Ministry and the Investigative Committee, but still, you perform your duties more diligently. You are unpurchasable. I gues no criminal will be able to bribe you. Ruthless struggling against corruption is insuring our country against a collapse and internal conflicts, because our people will not tolerate corruption. Corruption will definitely result in some kind of turmoil,” he said.

According to the Belarusian leader, the KGB plays an important role in the country:

“Many slam us for preserving the old name ‘KGB’ and call us reactionaries. But nowadays they envy us – we do not publicly discuss it, but I see it when discussing with my counterparts <…> There is nothing in our past to be ashamed. There are hardly any claims to be made against chekists. Firstly, we were part of the system, and yet, there was always lawlessness in Belarus. Therefore, I sincerely and openly said – we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
