Lukashenka: Joint projects by Belarus, Slovenia may emerge, EU no obstacle

If Belarus and Slovenia implement their joint projects, even the European Union will not be able to have a significant impact on the relations between the two countries, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka told Karl Erjavec, Slovenia’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr Erjavec was on an official visit to Belarus on March 24-25.

The Belarusian leader thanked Slovenia for its position in relation to Belarus. According to the Slovenian top official, the country was always opposed to imposing sanctions on Belarus because ‘they never solve existing problems’.

Economy is the foundation of bilateral relations, Lukashenka believes. “I am speaking about economy not because there are any problems. We cooperate with the Slovenian business, with all those who are willing to cooperate with us,” he said.

“To stabilize our economic relations, it would be great for us to implement a number of large-scale joint projects, maybe, 3 or 4 projects. In fact, these projects are in the pipeline and will help establish strong links between the two countries, and even the European Union will not be able to influence them because the economy is the backbone of everything,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes the president as saying.

Perhaps, the case was joint projects in energy and construction. Last year, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Alena Kupchyna expressed hope that the bilateral trade turnover that had been declining over the past years would grow in 2016.
