Love-hate relationship: Donetsk imposes sanctions on Luhansk

The so-called Donetsk People’s Republic has excluded certain goods from the neighbouring ‘Luhansk People’s Republic’.

In December, the leadership of the unrecognised republic decided to interdict the importation of excisable goods from Luhansk irrespective of their country of origin.

In the event of counter-sanctioning, Donetsk is set to take further steps:

„If prohibitions and restrictions on the importation of goods from the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic, analogous prohibitions and restrictions on entry into the territory of the DPR from the territory of the LPR will be established by normative legal acts of the Donetsk People’s Republic in relation to corresponding goods and items.”

The restrictions are not applicable to the transit of goods to the Russian Federation.

It is the goods delivered to Luhansk from Ukraine that will be mainly put under the DPR restrictions, local residents say on the Internet. However, the situation may also affect some Belarusian companies. In July, Belsat TV reporters proved that the self-declared republics bought food products from Belarus which officially does not trade with the enemy of its friend Ukraine. Belsat.eu reported the cases of exporting Belarusian agricultural machines and importing coal.
