Lithuania to install sirens due to Astravets NPP

Fire Safety and Rescue Department of Lithuania is planning to install warning sirens in the south-east of the country. They will inform the public about the possible dangers in the event of accidents at the Astravets NPP.

The Lithuanian government has developed a program to install sirens in 150 locations at a distance of 50 km from the Astravets NPP — 150 places in total, including in Vilnius and Vilnius region, as well as in Širvintos and Šalčininkai districts.

Deputy Director of DPBS Juris Targonskas claims that a similar system was set around the Ignalina nuclear power plant, when it was in operation.

“As the NPP will be located near the border, the impact zone will be on our territory, we are preparing to warn residents, if necessary,” he said.

Warnings will work in case of radioactive danger and in case of other accidents.

It is planned that the siren will be installed before the opening of the plant on the Belarusian side. It is reported that the sirens will cost the Government of Lithuania up to three million euros.

The Lithuanian Government maintains that the Astravets NPP, situated 50 km away from Vilnius, is being built in violation of safety standards. Minsk denies these accusations.
