Lithuania detains top Belarusian law enforcement officer for illegal carrying of ammunition

The Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office has brought a charge against a citizen of Belarus who was carrying cartridges in his car.

On Sunday evening the Belarusian-born K. and his wife were driving back from Lithuania.

“The customs service of Medininkai stopped a Belarus-registered Honda CR-V car on the road to Belarus. Several tens of 9 mm Luger cartridges were found in the car,” the press office reports.

A preliminary investigation has been conducted: the couple is charged with illegal carrying of live ammunition. In order to reduce risks of their fleeing from prosecution, the Lithuanian side has seized their identity cards.

The Belarusian Embassy to Lithuania was informed about the detention. Its representatives were allowed to meet with the detained nationals on Monday.

In the course of investigation the Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office has discovered that the owner of the car is a top officer at one of the Belarusian law enforcement agencies. Belarusian news service Tut.by says referring to its own sources its sources that the detained person is Dzmitry Kanaplianik (Dmitry Konoplianik), the head of the Minsk directorate of the Investigation Committee, who visited Lithuania as a tourist.
