Lithuania claims stress tests of Belarusian NPP not informative enough

According to the Lithuanian State Inspection on Nuclear Energy Safety, the report on the stress tests in the Astravets NPP that Belarus has provided for the assessment of the European Commission does not answer the main questions of Lithuania on the placement, environmental impact assessment, safety, or quality of construction.

Deputy head of nuclear security inspection will lead a working group of Lithuanian specialists that will analyze the national report on stress tests of the Belarusian NPP. The Europaen Commission has also established a group of experts on nuclear safety. By 5 January, the Lithuanian working group is to come up with comments and questions on the report and to send them to the European Commission — it will compile the comments of all the countries and present them to Belarus, and after receiving the responses, the European Commission will prepare a final evaluation. According to preliminary reports, the final evaluation will be presented in June next year.

In 2006, the stress tests at the Belarusian NPP were conducted by ‘Atomproekt’, a subsidiary of the main contractor “Rosatom”.
