Legal moonshining: Minsk barmen set old-new trend

Slonim winery has started production of moonshine (‘samogon’). Special equipment which is not produced on the line anywhere in the world is needed to manufacture the Belarusian traditional grain drink.

A Minsk-based company that won the tender customized a moonshine still for Slonim winery. A feature of the beverage is that it is made of a distillate, which is highly-prized in Europe, and untreated water containing minerals.

Slonim winery’s samogon is bottled and corked by hand. Now the company produces two moonshine-based beverages: ‘Traditional’ (42 degrees) and ‘Lyuty’ (Harsh) – 47 degrees.

A contract for the supply of the beverages to Belarusian duty free shops has been already signed. Italian businessmen have also shown interest in the product.

The presentation was held in Minsk bar ‘Hooligan’. Its barmen invented a special cocktail on the basis of Belarusian moonshine. They did not disclose the secret formula of the cocktail, but promised to do it later.
