Last peaceful day reenactment with NKVD and alcohol in Brest

In Brest, activists tried to reenact the events of the last peaceful day before the World War II. This is an annual event, but the “celebration of the war” is getting smaller every time.

This year, about 350 people in the Soviet army uniform marched along the Brest streets. Later, on one of the central streets of Brest — the Savietskaya Street — they staged a theatrical performance about the “last peaceful day” titled “War Came Next Day”.

The city was filled with people in the NKVD uniform and civilian clothes of the Soviet times. Many spent time in street cafes, people had fun and drank alcohol.

We asked a person in the NKVD uniform why he had put it on and whether he knew about the repression that the soldiers conducted while wearing it. In response, we were told that “this is not true and the NKVD did not execute people.”

People who came to the event are mostly positive about reenactment and believe that patriotism is manifested in this way, some of them call it a holiday and say that this day must be remembered.

Only a few people remember that the war for Brest began in September 1939.
