Kobryn activist Myekh withdraws from election race in favor of Statkevich

Alyaksandr Myekh has decided to support the initiative of Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu about the nomination of Mikalai Statkevich as a single candidate from the democratic forces and withdrew his candidacy, BelaPAN reports.

“We started our campaign much earlier than others and answered all the questions. When the people asked, “Who is there except Lukashenka?” – “Alyaksandr Myekh.” “Who is he?” – We offered a biography. “What can we expect from him, and what he offers?” – we are the only ones at the moment who have a presidential program. This raises another question: how to make the program work. It is necessary to have free and fair elections. We currently have fake ones, and we should not take part in this fake story,” said Mr Myekh in a comment to Nasha Niva.

It should be noted that on that very morning he was still ready to take part in the election campaign.

According to Mr Myekh, deputy head of the  movement For Statehood and Independence of Belarus created by Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, the main thing now is to change the electoral law and release  political prisoners. Thus he decided to support the initiative of Mr Nyaklyayeu, who on June 29 called on all potential presidential candidates to withdraw from the election before the registration of nominating groups.

“This initiative should be expanded. It is necessary to call on the people to not participate in these elections, and those who are forced to go to the polls we should offer to strike out all the candidates whose names are on the ballot,” said Alyaksandr Myekh.

So far, Volha Karach and Alyona Anisim have also withdrawn from the election along with Mr Myekh.

Among those who are currently have presidential ambitions are Tatstsiana Karatkevich, Syarhei Kalyakin, Anatol Lyabedzka, Yury Shulman, Syarhei Haydukevich.

Presidential election will take place on October 11. The registration of nominating groups has already started. According to a survey of the Independent Institute of Socio-Economic and Political Studies, located in Lithuania, 71.1% of the respondents expressed their willingness to vote in the presidential election in 2015. The majority of respondents are in favor of Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
