Russian court denies parole to Belarusian who showed solidarity with Ukraine on web


The defense lawyer’s petition for Belarusian Kiryl Silivonchyk’s parole has been denied, the Russian human rights organization ‘Nizhniy Novgorod Political Red Cross’ reports. The hearing took place on 16 September in Semenovski court of Nizhniy Novgorod region.

At the moment, Kiryl Silivonchyk, whose time is to be completed in December, is in a penal colony Nr 14 in Sukhobezvodnoye.

According to the prison administration, Silivonchyk is still under preventive supervision as a ‘person who studies, promotes, professes extremist ideology’.

Kiryl Silivonchyk, a native of the Belarusian city of Homiel, worked as a network engineer at a plant in Russia’s Nizhniy Novgorod. In December, 2014 he was arrested and charged under Art. 205.2. of Russia’ Criminal Code (public incitement to terrorist activity or public justification of terrorism). In fact, the Belarusian posted pictures and texts dedicated to the events in Ukraine, called  to give Crimea back to Ukraine on his Vkontakte social network profile in October 2014. But a court in Russia sentenced him to two years of penal settlement.
