‘We really need to improve our relations’: Kadyrov set to visit Belarus

Chechnya’s leader has expressed his intention to visit Belarus once again. Kadyrov’s speech was televised by state-run TV channel Belarus 1.

“We were about to visit Belarus twice, we were invited, experts were engaged. Unfortunately, there was a number of reasons why we failed to come. But I am set to go to Belarus at a time which will suit the Belarusian authorities of Belarus. We really need to improve our relations.”

He also invited Alyaksandr Lukashenka to visit Chechnya. “It will be very important to us both in the political and economic sense,” the Chechen leader said.

On November 17, Ramzan Kadyrov addressed Lukashenka on Twitter and Instagram and showed his readiness to arrive in Belarus and meet with him. He added that Chechen people, in turn, would definitely extend a cordial welcome to Lukashenka.

At Thursday’s press conference for Russian journalists, the president expressed regret that Kadyrov had never been to Belarus.

Meanwhile, thousands of Chechens – citizens of Russia – are staying at the Belarusian city of Brest. They want to get into the EU and seek asylum, but Polish border guards are reluctant to let them pass. Kadyrov attempted to assure the fugitives that there was no threat to them in Chechnya and stressed that it was ‘inappropriate’ to call them ‘refugees’..

Interestingly, Russia considers Chechen Ruslan Mukhudinov to be an orderer and organizer of the murder of prominent opposition leader Boris Nemtsov. Mukhudinov, who is on the international wanted list now, served in the Chechen battalion ‘Sever’ which was transformed into a special motorized regiment named after Akhmad-Hadji Kadyrov in 2010. The soldiers of this regiment are guards of the incumbent leader of Chechnya.
