May 18 is Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Crimean Tatar deportation which was held against the order of Josef Stalin in 1944.  The witnesses to those scary events never thought that the history would repeat itself. Three films will show us the dramatic fate of the Crimean Tatar people.

When The Wing Does Down, Wednesday, May 18, 22:05 (Minsk time)

The film tells the story of a Crimean Tatar family which is staying in occupied Crimea. With the help of four human stories movie features the everyday of many people who live under the pressure of Russia’s political regime.

After Russia’s annexation of Crimea many of the Crimean Tatars left the occupied territory because they were standing up against the Russian influence and were facing retaliation on the part of the Kremlin. Their spiritual and political leader Mustafa Dzhemilev had to flee from Crimea. Although his family is still residing there, he is denied entry to Crimea.

In 1944, the Crimean Tatars were killed or deported en masse, which was stamped in the memory of survivors. In the 1980s, when the Soviet Union was in crisis, Crimean Tatars began to return to their homeland. In 2014 they were forced to leave it again.

In his film director Igor Chayka is trying to give reasons for the Crimean crisis in 2014. He goes backto  2010, when Viktor Yanukovych won the presidential election. The director draws the viewer’s attention to what was happening on the peninsula over the recent years, i.e. opening of the House of Moscow, giving out Russian passports, increasing pro-Russian sentiment in the region.
