'If one wants to work, let them': Lukashenka warns against firing pensioners

At the same time, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka stated that retirement age would not be raised in Belarus.

“You know my opinion on the issue. We told people that with certain retirement age we will have a certain amount of the pension fund that will be divided between all pensioners,” he said at a government meeting on social security matters on Friday.

In September, 2014 Lukashenka sait it was high time retirement age had been raised. “But you do not want it. I promised you that we would consult you [people] previous to it,” he said.

On the average, there is one pensioner to 1.3 able-bodied citizen in Belarus. ”It is not normal. It is necessary that the proportion should be at least 1:3,” the Belarusian leader says. He blasted business leaders and directors who allow dismissing the people in retirement age.

“If a person wants to work, let them! Otherwise our slogan of the social state will remain just a slogan. We need to be humane. But if some business managers do not understand this they should be fired, and when they stay out of work for a long time, we will see what they will be preaching. I urge you against a formal approach to implementing my instructions,” state-owned news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka as saying.

In January 2015, the minimum length of employment increased to 15 years in Belarus. The retirement age is 55 years for women, 60 years – for men.
