Homyel: Police steal Ukrainian flags from monument to Taras Shevchenko

In the Belarusian city of Homyel local policemen have stolen the Ukrainian flags which were at the monument to famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, the website of youth organisation ‘Young Front’ reports.

On March, 9, the 201st anniversary of the poet’s birth, Homyel-based activists of Young Front and coalition ‘Our Alternative’ paid tribute to Taras Shevchenko. They laid flowers and Ukrainian flags to his monument.

The police were not slow in coming. Five minutes later a police officer ran up to the monument, grabbed the flags, crushed them down and then got into a police car. The car was behind the theatre, it is impossible to see a monument from there. One can only guess how the police learnt about the action.

“We also want to ask our government why it is wasting taxes paid by the Belarusians. Two policemen spent the whole day near the monument, so that they could steal the Ukrainian paper flags that are sold everywhere,” Young Front representatives wonder.
