Historical maximum: Belarus debt to Russia amounts to $6.5 bn


In early October, Belarus’ debt under Russian state credits has reached $ 6.5 billion.

The data were made public in the run-up to the participation of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of the EAEC.

“As of 2 October 2017, the debt of the Republic of Belarus in the form of state credits granted by the Russian Federation amounted to $ 6.2 bn and 59.9 bn Russian rubles (in total, $ 6.5 bn). Belarus does not have any overdues,” news agency RIA Novosti reports with reference to the materials of the Council.

There are eight intergovernmental credit agreements between the two countries – one granted for the construction of the Belarusian NPP in Astravets and seven financial credits; their total amount is $15 bn. In September, the Russian party gave a state financial loan in the amount of $700 mln in 2017 to Belarus to repay and serve its debt to Russia.

Since the beginning of the year, the total foreign debt of Belarus has been up by 14% and reached $15.5 bn.
