Gold coins found during metro construction in Minsk

The Minsk metro construction workers have unearthed some ancient gold coins which experts believe may date back to the times of Russian Tsar Nicholas II, i.e. to the beginning of the XXth century, state-run news agency BelTA reports.

Gold coins were minted in the period from 1897 until 1911 and were in circulation on a par with paper money in the Russian Empire.

All the found coins are of 5-ruble nominal value. Presumably, they are made of nearly pure gold.

The coins have been handed to the administration of Minsk’s Kastrychnitski District for temporary storage. Then they will be transported to the Museum of the History of Minsk. After expert analysis the finding will make part of the museum funds.
