Window dressing in Homiel: City ready to welcome Belarus leader

Homiel region is preparing for the arrival of the head of state. Alyaksandr Lukashenka is expected to to visit Homiel-based Lyceum of the Emergency situations Ministry. However, not only this venue should look impeccable…

Lukashenka might never set his foot on this sidewalk, but workers are replacing its paving stones by new ones. To please his eye, locals are painting trees: firstly, ill-looking branches were cut down, now they are trying to make cut-offs invisible.

Neither date of the visit nor its venue has been officially reported. The security services might be trying to keep information in secret, but it is easy to figure out the route due to the efforts of utility service providers.

Lukashenka would not be able to put an end to this shameful tradition iven if he wanted to do it, trade union leader Alyaksandr Yarashuk stresses. “Perhaps, our president likes to be deceived. If he were more attentive, they would not manage to deceive him,” the activist says.

But the worst thing is that Belarusian taxpayers should ‘sponsor’ this dog and pony show. The funds might have been allocated to paying salaries off but the local authorities are wasting them on paints i order to make green leaves greener.
