Board of the Belarusian National Congress has met in the capital for the first time. It had 15 people, including 7 representatives of the regions.

“Initially, the goal set was the consolidation of democratic forces, this process has already begun. I said at the start that this was only the beginning of the process, and it would continue in Minsk and in the regions, there would be created new coalitions, the democratic forces will unite from below. We will unite to return Belarus to freedom,” said Mikalai Statkevich at the Congress.

Congress participants will also seek to create a single list of opposition candidates. In this sense, the elections to the House of Representatives will be a landmark trial for a new initiative on the ability to negotiate.

“We have defined our main goal – creating a single list at this stage, and we have defined how we want to communicate, and we talk about what we sometimes lack in Belarus — about compromises. We need to make certain concessions to unite. I hope that there will be changes,” said Stanislau Shushkevich.

Meeting of the Congress of the Board will take place once a month. At the same time negotiations for accession of other structures to the initiative will continue. As the members of the board said, they believed in the regions.

“Here in Minsk we are all in one pot and it is difficult to expect something, and people from the regions in this respect are a fact of life for us,” said Vatslau Areshka, political analyst.

“Congress should unite us, because for 20 years nobody has solved anything,” said private entrepreneur from Baranavichy Mikalay Charnavus.

Belarusian National Congress was held in the Yanka Kupala Park in Minsk on May 15th. More than 10 people, including the organizers, were fined for participation in Congress.
