‘Fiction out of the blue’: Ukraine, Lithuania flatly reject Lukashenka’s claims

The two neighboring countries have responded to Tuesday’s statements by Belarusian president Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

According to the Belarusian leader, armed militants ‘trained in Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania’ were detained in the country. In his opinion, it is them who planned ‘provocations’ during protest rallies.

“The Embassy of Ukraine in Belarus regrets to say that over the recent years information hygiene issues have becoming urgent for the Belarusian information space: one accuses Ukrainian citizens of possible involvement in extremist activities and allows themselves to make insulting remarks towards the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and defenders of the Revolution of Dignity,” the Ukrainian side stresses.

It turn, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius denied information about instructing provokers in Lithuania as ‘fiction out of the blue’.

“We want a country leader to make well-grounded statements. In this case, this is an evidence-free concoction of lies,” he said.

Moreover, Linas Linkevičius called on the Belarusian authorities to stop looking for domestic and foreign enemies amid the growing crisis in Belarus.

In February-March, there has been an eruption of protesting the so-called ‘parasite’ law in Belarus. About 200 Belarusians have been detained, fined, jailed after recent non-parasite marches.  Last week, trials of participants were held in Minsk, Hrodna and Mahiliou. Most of them were accused of violating the order of holding mass events and disobedience to police officers’ demands. It should be noted that plainclothes policemen who refuse to show their IDs a or introduce themselves often beat people and prevented journalists from performing their professional duties.
