Ex-political prisoner sentenced to 15 days in jail for protest against Zapad-2017

A Minsk court sentenced Pavel Sevyarynets, a co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy and former political prisoner, to 15 days under arrest for taking part in the ‘warning rally’ in early September.

On September 8, Mikalai Statkevich, one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, led the protest against the Belarusian-Russian military exercise ‘Zapad-2017’ in Minsk.

The opposition warned against ‘occupation from the inside’ as well as ‘external aggression’ and adopted a resolution slamming Belarus’ hosting Zapad-2017.

No one was detained during the rally, but later poet and politician Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu spent 7 days in prison for participating. Mikalai Statkevich was also put in jail. Mahiliou-based activist Stanislau Pavlinkovich was BYN 460 fined. Protocols were drawn upon politicians and activists Yauhen Afnagel, Vyachaslau Siuchyk, Ales Makayeu, Pavel Sevyarynets, Nina Bahinskaya.
