EU Commissioner: No thaw in energy dialogue until Belarus NPP proved safe

If Belarus wants a thaw in the energy dialogue with the European Union, it should prove the safety of its nuclear power plant in Astravets, EU Energy Union Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said on Thursday.

“It is crucial stress tests of EU standards be carried out under the most adverse conditions. Without such tests, we cannot unfreeze the energy dialogue, which undoubtedly limits our ability to cooperate with Belarus. I think that Belarus realizes that we take this issue very seriously,” the EU top official said when answering questions of Lithuanian Seimas MPs in Vilnius.

According to him, the results will be evaluated by the European Committee of European Securities Regulators, which, among others, will comprise representatives of Lithuania.

The Lithuanian side has repeatedly criticized the construction of the nuclear power plant 50 kilometers from Vilnius and encouraged the rest of the countries of the United Europe to not buy electricity from the future NPP.

Lithuania is not only concerned about the proximity of the station to Vilnius, but also with a number of emergencies during the NPP construction.

Among the emergencies are a reactor vessel accident, when it fell during the transportation, the collapse of the concrete structure at the site between the reactors. Our channel was the first to report on the incident. Before the official request of the Lithuanian side, representatives of the Belarusian NPP denied this information.
