EU cancels visas for Georgians

The European Parliament has voted for visa-free regime with Georgia. The people of this country will be able to freely visit the Schengen zone.

The abolition of the visa regime was supported by 553 deputies of the European Parliament out of 647. Against were 66 people, in particular, MEPs from the UK and the Netherlands, who considered the decision premature. Abstaining were 28. Earlier, Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili called the planned abolition of visas a historic event.

Maria Gabriel, EU parliament rapporteur on Georgia, expects that the visa-free regime will take effect on the end of March. A number of technical issues will be solved by then.

“Georgians, who have a biometric passport, will be eligible to enter the EU without a visa for 90 days out of 180 days. This applies to business, tourist or family trips, but does not apply to work,” she specified.

MEPs pointed out that in case of violations (in case of an uncontrolled influx of migrants and refugees from their territory), the European Union may use a mechanism for the suspension of the visa regime of Georgia.
