Crimean scenario: Donbas militants plot referendum on acceding to Russia

Russian-backed separatists are about to use the scenario of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in Donbas after the local election in October, online newspaper ostro.org reports with reference to a source close to the leadership of the unrecognised Donetsk republic.

A ‘referendum’ is to be held after the election of local authorities which is scheduled for October, 18. The same election commission is expected to organise it.

The questionnaires have been reportedly printed in the colours of the Russian flag.

Pro-Russian separatists previously stated that they did not recognize the law on local elections, signed by Petro Poroshenko saying it had been adopted ‘in violation of the Minsk Agreements’. They announced intention to hold the election in accordance with their own ‘legislation’.

It was also reported that the election would not take place in some areas of Donbas, e.g. in Debaltseve.

Meanwhile, the OSCE reported significant deterioration of the situation near Donetsk, Horlivka and Mariupol.
