Collecting information is forbidden: another case opened against independent journalist

The Belarusian authorities want to bring Hrodna-based journalist Ales Kirkevich to justice for the news item about the exhibition of Slutsk belts in the local museum of the history of religion which was aired on Belsat in early May.

He is accused of illegal production and distribution of media products (art. 22.9 of the Administrative Code).

Ales Kirkevich denies the accusation saying that only legal bodies can be held liable in accordance with this article.

Five (!) independent journalists were called to the police in Brest and Hrodna on March 18-19.

On March 26, the case of independent journalist Ales Lyauchuk was tried in Brest. The journalist was found guilty in absentia; the court imposed Br 3,780 000 fine on him.
