Chechen migrants stop protests at Belarusian-Polish border

More than 100 Chechens who were at the crossing point ‘Brest’ at the Belarusian-Polish border, have left, human rights activist Raman Kislyak told news agency BelaPAN.

“Today they have sent an appeal to the representatives of the Chechen diaspora in Poland hoping that their problem will start to be solved”, he said on Tuesday evening.

On August 29, Russian citizens – former residents of Chechnya – staged a rally at the Belarusian-Polish border protesting against the fact that the Polish border guards would not let them into the European Union. All of them had unsuccessfully tried to cross the border at the crossing point by bus and Brest – Terespol train.

“This way refugees from Chechnya tried to draw attention to their problem. According to some, they had been living in Brest several months and every day made an effort to go to Poland to get refugee status there. Chechens say they left home, as it is impossible to live there,” Kislyak said.

According to the activist, no one was detained.
