Brest-based independent journalist at authorities' gunpoint

On Thursday a police officer who gave a name of Andrey Kazhenka phoned Brest-based independent journalist and Belsat TV contributor Ales Liauchuk and ask him to come to a police station so that he could be questioned about interview Mr Liauchuk was holding in the centre of the city on November, 24.

“The officer also said a administrative case had been initiated against me,” the journalist told belsat.eu. Mr Liauchuk is not going to appear at a police station without being summoned. “But I did not make up this story,” the officer said and promised to deliver a summons by hand.

According to Ales Liauchuk, as on November, 24 he was busy interviewing the residents of Brest, collecting people’s opinions and gathering information, there is no reason for opening any administrative case, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reports. The independent journalist also stressed on that day two unknown men had photographed him when he was working. They might have been police or KGB officers, Mr Liauchuk added.
