State newspaper wins case against former political prisoner Dzyadok

The court dismissed the claim of the former political prisoner Mikalai Dzyadok against the newspaper “Belarus Today”.

On September 1, a Minsk court continued the hearing of the case of former political prisoner Mikalai Dzyadok against the Internet media outlet “Belarus Today” about protection of honor and dignity.

The case was heard by the judge Dzmitry Zhdanok. Earlier, the judge heard the testimony of both the plaintiff and defendants — author of the artice Andrei Mukavozchyk and the legal department editor Alyaksei Shpileuski.

Later, the defendants submitted their review, and the court questioned witnesses.

As a result, the judge decided to deny anarchist’s claim.

Mikalai Dzyadok decided to sue the newspaper after its website published an article “Anarchy, the mother…” authored by Andrei Mukavozchyk. The text included false information about Mikalai Dzyadok’s sentence for attacking the Russian Embassy in Minsk with Molotov cocktails. Former political prisoner held that the false information humiliated his honor and dignity and went to court to protect his honor and get compensated for moral damages.

Mikalai Dzyadok was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison based on part 2 of the Article 339 of the Criminal Code ( “hooliganism committed by a group of persons”) by a Minsk court on May 27, 2011. Human rights activists have recognized him as a political prisoner.
