Belarusian ruble falling: People buy up TV sets, home appliances


A sudden rise in the U.S. dollar and the euro has affected everyday life of the residents of Hrodna. Today the exchange rate is Br 17,600-17,850 per dollar and Br 20,200-21,150 per euro. But there are stil no queues at exchange offices: hardly anybody wants to buy foreign currency at this rate and no one want to sell –  what if the rate will continue to increase?

But, there is a real buzz in the stores with home appliances. ‘Fifth Element’ in Gorky street is  empty, and there is a dozen of packaged refrigerators that are tobe delivered to their. People are standing in lines to buy home appliances on credit in Karona store.

A man with a mobile phone in his hand is looking at TV sets:  “Listen, yesterday they cost Br 18 mln, and today – 21!”

At the same time, ‘awkward’ questions have appeared on the walls of the city buildings. “What will we eat?” someone asked the authorities and spray-painted the question on an apartment building in Papovich street.

These warm August days the city seems to have frozen in anticipation of new unpleasant surprises from the Belarusian economic model…
