Belarusian police detained head of major 'tobacco syndicate'


On July 28, at the National Airport “Minsk”, law enforcement officers detained a citizen of Lithuania wanted by Interpol, Interior Ministry press office reports.

According to the head of the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Belarus Alyaksandr Pyatran, the man is wanted for smuggling.

According to the Lithuanian bureau of Interpol, the man headed an organized criminal group which involved the citizens of Belarus, Latvia, and Russia.

The smugglers transported Belarusian cigarettes via Russia and Latvia to the EU, using land and sea transport.

Interior Ministry reports that in November 2015 the smugglers ferried to the UK 1,118,320 packs of cigarettes from Belarus without EU excise stamps. Later, they were trying to smuggle in Britain 158,400 more packs of cigarettes. Then the truck smuggling truck was detained by police.

At present, the detainee is under temporary arrest, while the law enforcement bodies of Lithuania will file a request for extradition, writes mvd.gov.by.
