Belarusian opposition politician detained in Krupki after talking to local authorities


Anatol Lyabedzka, Chairman of the United Civic Party, and activists Denis Krasachka and Henadz Veratsinski were detained in the Belarusian town of Krupki on Thursday.

The police appeared when the trio were leaving the building of the district executive committee where they handed over the proposal to hold a round table on job creation to local officials.

“A traffic police car stopped, three policemen stepped out and ordered to go to the police department with them,” the leader of the United Civic Party said.

According to the opposition politician, the representatives of the UCP visited a local market where they distributed leaflets containing information about the party. They also visited a local court to express solidarity with the entrepreneur was to have tried today, but they were informed that the trial had ended by that moment.

The police officers wanted the detainees to turn off phones and other recording devices, but they refused to do so, Lyabedzka said.
