Belarusian national weightlifting team faces suspension from World Cup 2017

Belarus and 8 more successful teams in weightlifting, among them China and Russia, are likely to be excluded from the 2017 World Cup.

The reason is the multiple doping offenses at the Olympics, insidethegames.biz reports.

A committee of three persons set up to make proposals to the Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on how to deal with teams from nine countries that had three to ten positive results in the second doping test in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012, will meet at the weekend in Budapest.

The Report of the Commission will be represented at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation in Bucharest on 30 September and 1 October.

The initial decision to impose sanctions against the teams with three or more positive samples were taken at the IWF meeting in Tbilisi 15 months ago, but the implementation of this decision was delayed due to appeals and under the influence of legal arguments.

Last week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said that the last two appeals filed by the Chinese, who won gold at the Beijing Games in 2008, failed, like all the previous appeals of individual athletes and national federations.

The CAS urged the IWF to remove teams of 9 countries — Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey and China, but pointed out that in each case an individual approach should be used, as some teams have only 3 positive doping tests, while Russia and Kazakhstan have 10.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2017 will be held in late November – early December in Anaheim (USA).
