Belarus to produce its own jeans

The list of goods for import substitution has another item.

Bellegpram is planning to establish production of Belarusian analogue of imported jeans. On Thursday, March 18, Mikalai Yafimchyk, chairman of the group, said the following  at the press conference in Minsk:

“The question is difficult, but we will bring it to the end,” said Yafimchyk.

He stressed that Belarusian jeans will not be made entirely of cotton:

“It is pointless for us to compete with Turkmenistan, for example, where jeans cost $7. Ours could be made of a mixture of cotton, flax and special additives,” said the head of Bellegpram.

The concern predicts that the Belarusian jeans will cost higher than the average price.

According to Yafimchyk, domestic jeans are now developed by the “Vorsha Linen Mill” and “Baranavichy Cotton Production Association”. Professionals from Turkmenistan will join the cooperation.

Chairman of Bellegpram did not mention when the jeans will appear in stores.

The first jeans were made by Levi Strauss in 1853 as clothing for workers and farmers. They appeared in the Soviet Union in 1957 during the World Festival of Youth and Students.
