Belarus shares Europe's problem: Nation rapidly aging

A number of aged people has increased by nearly 75,000 for the last 10 years, the National Committee for Statistics reports.

At the beginning of 2014 1.879 mln Belarusians fell into category “Aged People” (from 60 and over), including 0.665 mln males and 1.224 mln females.

According to the UN demographic scale, a country’s population is considered as ‘aged’ if a number of people aged 65 and older is 7% of its total. In Belarus this age group comprises 13.9% of the population. If the trend persists, in 2050 every third Belarusian will be a pensioner.

It is noteworthy that age pension payments are given to 2.084 mln Belarusians at the present moment.
