Belarus now member of UN Economic and Social Council

On June 15, the UN General Assembly elected Belarus to be a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website reports.

“Honorary election of Belarus to ECOSOC indicates a high level of trust in the UN member states to the country and its prestige in the international arena, as well as the hopes that are put on Belarus as a new member of ECOSOC,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus noted.

The Economic and Social Council is one of the main UN bodies. ECOSOC includes 54 states, who are elected by the General Assembly for three years on the geographical basis. Six countries represent the region of Eastern Europe.

This is the ninth term for Belarus as part of ECOSOC. The first time Belarus was elected to ECOSOC was in 1947.
