Lukashenka: Belarus’ interest in advancing partnership relations with USA remains unchanged

Belarus’ interest in advancing full-value partnership relations with the United States remains unchanged, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka told the delegation of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday.

“Over the last 2-3 years we have restored a certain level of political trust. It would have been impossible without a mutual desire. I believe that the previous decade, during which we lived with uncertainty and sanctions, is a period of lost opportunities as far as our relations are concerned. We are starting to recover from that state of affairs little by little. We are trying to advance cooperation with your country in the areas where our interests coincide,” he said.

Lukashenka expressed his readiness to hear out ‘any remarks and ideas’. According to him, the Belarusian side is fully aware of what the American side expects with regard to human rights, democracy and other matters: “We are not steering away from them. We are ready to discuss them in any way and place — Minsk, Washington or New York.”

In his opinion, at the moment present the pace of advancement of Belarus-USA relations has slowed down a bit.

“Some ill-wishers of ours say that normalization has run out of gas, that our relations with the USA are once again entering a crisis period. I cannot agree with that: there is no crisis. But there is a shortage of ideas. This is why our meeting today is very important for keeping up the pace that we achieved once,” he added.
