Belarus ex-PM echoes Russia: Inviting peacekeepers to Ukraine will undermine Minsk accords

Inviting peacekeepers to Ukraine will undermine the Minsk accords, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus’ National Assembly Mikhail Miasnikovich said Thursday when commenting on the proposal of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to bring peacekeeping forces to the country.

“Changing rules during the game is not the best idea. This may threaten the implementation of the Minsk accords. If a decision is taken, it needs to be fulfilled,” Mikhail Miasnikovich told Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia.

For her part, Ms Matviyenko noted that decisions about peacekeepers should be taken with the consent of both parties to a conflict, Belarusian news agency BelTA reports.

As Belsat reported earlier, on Wednesday evening Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council supported President Poroshenko’s initiative to ask the United Nations to send peacekeeping mission to Ukraine while Russia and Russian-backed militants slammed the idea.
