Belarus detains Russian citizen who intended to join Islamic State


Belarus’ State Border Committee confirmed the detention of the Russian who was set to join the ranks of the Islamic State. The detainee is a 25-year-old resident of Russia’s Khanty-Mansiysk region with prior criminal convictions.

“We hold information about his possible involvement in extremist and terrorist activities in the territory of Russia,” the press service of the State Border Committee says.

The perpetrator is reported to have carried a backpack with a camouflage cloak, dry fuel, a compass, a flashlight, a knife, a change of underwear, a thermos and a navigator.

According to RIA Novosti, his name is Nurlan Bekmurzayev. In Belarus, the man is administratively liable for the attempted illegal border crossing, as well as for violation of border regime. BYN 345 fine has been imposed on him; the violator will be deported and banned from entering Belarus for a period of 5 years.

Now the offender is in a predetention centre.
