Better late than never: Belarus joins International Maritime Organization

Belarus is the last European country to have acceded to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

“The Republic of Belarus has become the latest Member of IMO, following the deposit of an instrument of acceptance of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization with the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 29 November 2016, the IMO press service reports.

With the acceptance of the Convention by Belarus, the number of IMO Member States stands at 172, with a further three Associate Members (Hong Kong, Macao and Faroes).

IMO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.

Interestingly, Belarus’s joining IMO occurred soon after Belarus started buying Azerbaijani oil which is shipped through Ukraine’s Odessa port.
