Belarus currency market: Curb exchange rising from ashes

A successor to blocked currency exchange website prokopovi.ch has appeared on the Internet. According to its founders, Dollarnash (Dollar is Ours) has the most profitable exchange rates in the country.

Dollarnash.com looks like an advertisement board where anyone can post their offer. A lot of offers made earlier are not valid now.

Such currency swaps are outlawed in Belarus. It is not clear how the website’s founders are going to take its visitors off the heat.

Prokopovi.ch was named after Piotr Prokopovich, notorious ex-Chair to the National Bank of Belarus who made sounding promises not to devalue the Belarusian ruble. As a response to people’s demand for foreign currency, Prokopovi.ch was founded and actively working in 201, making possible immediate buying and selling of foreign currency, when the domestic currency fell by 60%. Having found an appropriate offer on the website anyone could arrange a meeting with the other party and buy or sell currency with the help of any authorised bank, which cut down risks to be persecuted by the police. But now the Belarusian authorities imposed 30% tax on buying foreign currency, which makes it impossible to use the previous scheme.

This temporary 30% levy on purchasing foreign currency enforced in Belarus on Friday is commonly regarded as a disguised devaluation.
