Barysau: Activists set to hold picket over alleged murder of Belarus army conscript

On October 12, Barysau district executive committee registered the application for holding a picket in the central square of the city.

According to the applicant, human rights activist and lawyer Aleh Matskevich, the picketers will call on Belarusian authorities to dismiss Defense Minister Andrey Raukou and bring all persons who caused the death of conscript Alyaksandr Korzhych to justice.

Aleh Matskevich expects the city authorities to give their permission for organising the ebent near the building of the North-Western Operational Command. Up to ten people may take part in the picket scheduled for October 30, ex-Press reports.

By the moment, nearly 8,800 signatures were put under the online petition demanding the resignation of Andrey Raukou. The public campaign was launched in connection with a recent tragedy in Pechy military unit.

The 21-year-old soldier was found hanged in the basement in the territory of a military unit in Pechy, his legs were tied up. According to the family and friends, senior conscripts bullied, battered and tortured the young man to squeeze money out of him. As a result, they allegedly killed him and then faked his suicide.
