‘At front’. If fails, Belarus might merge into another state - Lukashenka

If Belarus fails to solve economic problems, it may lose its independence or become a party to the armed conflict, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka believes.

“If you arrived at decisions to do something at your staff meetings, it should be done. Only one reason – death – may account for not fulfilling a task. We are at the front. If we do not withstand in the next years, we will have to become part of some other state, or others will wipe their feet on us. Or, God forbid, there will be a war unleashed in Belarus, like in Ukraine,” Lukashenka said at a meeting with officials on June 22.

During the working visit to Shklou region, the Belarusian leader slammed local officials for underperforming and the general situation in the agricultural sector. “Do whatever you want – toye to the mark, take guns – but put things to rights here,” he ordered.

Interestingly, these quotes were not included in the reports by the state-run news agency and the presidential press service. But Lukashenka’s warning of the feasibility of Belarus’ merging into another country was aired by TV station ONT:

Alyaksandr Lukashenka also set the task to make possible the raising of the average salary in the agricultural sector in to 1,000 Belarusian rubles (about $500). He also ordered to restore ‘iron discipline’.

“Punishments should be enforced for bad work, for failures to observe the technology, or, god forbid, unlawful actions. We need iron discipline. Everything should work smoothly,” stressed the Belarusian leader.
