Arrested Belarus politician barred from seeing lawyer, paramedics

A defense lawyer has not been allowed to visit former political prisoner and 2010 presidential candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu who was put to the temporary detention facility in Minsk.

“They were to have a meeting today. But the lawyers was told that all rooms were taken. Of course, I have a lot of trouble believing that,” his wife Volha told Belsat.

The Belarusian poet and opposition politician was arrested on May, 6 by Belarusian riot police near his home. He was tried in absentia and sentenced to 5 days in jail for his participation in the ‘non-parasite’ march on 17 February in Minsk.

Nyaklyayeu’s lawyer said this was the first time in its practice when he was prevented from seeing a defendant. Politicians Pavel Sevyarynets and Vyachaslau Siuchyk are also barred from being visited by their lawyers.

An unknown man phoned Volha Nyaklyayeva and said that on Monday evening her husband felt bad and asked prison wards to call an ambulance, but they refused to do it.

“Today he had his blood pressure taken, they gave him some pills… I do not know in what condition he is now. I will keep trying to contact the prison authorities,” she says.

In late March, Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu was hospitalized and diagnosed with hypertensive crisis after his being detained by Brest border guards.
