Armoured vehicle race to Belarus: Russians set to mark anniversary of Nazi Germany’s attack on USSR

Russian military equipment amateurs are set to hold an armoured vehicle run on the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s attack on the USSR. Russia’s Military and Technical Society wants the race to take place on the route Moscow-Brest on June 17-24.

The participants are about to drive decommissioned military vehicles. They say they will start from Moscow’s Poklonnaya Hill and head for Brest going through Orsha, Barysau, Minsk, Baranavichy, Kobryn.

At least 15 armoured vehicles, 3 World War II vehicles and amateurs’ reconstructed military equipment able to cover 2,400 km will be engaged in the run – the organizers are going to set a record of Russia.

“We intended to submit a bid to set a Guinness world record, because no one driving a military vehicle had ever covered such a distance within such a short time. But they wanted money, and we decided to set a record of Russia,” Andrey Konnov, Spokesman for the Military and Technical Society in Moscow, told belsat.eu.

The organizers suppose that about 6 mln people will be able to see their race in their own eyes, and about 10 mln – on the Internet.

“Brest is the culmination, it is the most important, our arrival there is the reason why we got the ball rolling. Then we will turn around, go back and close the event in Moscow,” he said.

Are they welcome in Brest?

By the moment, however, the organizers failed to inform the Brest Fortress administration of their plans. Alyaksei Malochnikau, Head of Education and Science Department of the memorial complex, learned about the oncoming race from the Internet. He did not know that the Brest Fortress was expected to be a ‘culmination point’.

“They have not sent any letter to us. In any case we need to take a look at their plan and approve it. No one has let us know about the event so far,” the official told belsat.eu.
