Another prisoner executed in Belarus

The executed person was a resident of Homiel. Syarhei Vostrykau had been sentenced to death in May 2016 and charged with brutal murder of two women, rape and kidnapping.

According to the human rights website spring96.org, the 34-year-old Vostrykau could have been executed in April 13-29, as his last letter from prison was dated April 13. In addition, his mother was allowed to meet with her son in prison on 5 April. It was their last meeting.

Human rights activists do not exclude the possibility of there also being shot another person previously sentenced to death — a resident of Mozyr Kirill Kazachak, who had been convicted of murdering two of his children. This information is to be confirmed.

Alyaksei Mikhalenia is still on death row, but he still has an opportunity to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court.

The representative of the European External Action Service has published a statement calling for Belarus to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty.

“The death penalty is contrary to Belarus’ readiness to cooperate with the international community, including with the European Union on this issue and to consider the introduction of a moratorium on the death penalty,” he said in a statement, which called on Belarus to immediately establish a moratorium on the death penalty .
