Another activist to be tried for interview with non-state media

On November 9, Kobrin district court will review an administrative case of social activist Syarhey Faleychyk. He also gave an interview to the independent media, which was labelled “participation in an unauthorized event”.

The interview took place on October 21 during the March of Outraged Belarusians 2.0 in Minsk. During the opposition rally, Syarhey Faleychyk gave an interview to the independent media. This was the reason for the administrative proceedings under Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code i.e. “participation in an unauthorized event”.

Thus, Mr Faleichyk is the third man after Uladzimir Neklyayeu and Valeryi Mints, whom authorities are trying to bring to justice for alleged incitement to participation in an unauthorized mass event.

On November 1, a Minsk court sentenced the poet and politician Uladzimir Neklyayeu to 10 days of administrative arrest under part 3 of the article 23.34 of the Administrative Code for alleged call for participation in the protest. The basis for the protocol was an interview with “Belsat”.

Human rights activists believe that Nyaklyayeu was the first victim of the “rough liberalization”, which was promised by Ihar Shunevich. As noted by Valyantsin Stefanovich, currently, sharing of the information calling for participation in an unauthorized mass event will be the subject to proceedings as an offense under Part 1 of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code. Also, interviews with such calls will also result in administrative arrest for up to 15 days.
