Americans openly deploy Patriots near Warsaw

“Today, we demonstrate the ability of the United States to quickly deploy the Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems in Poland if needed. We are here to show our Polish allies that the US security guarantees to Poland in NATO mean more than just words on paper,” said during a training exercise US ambassador to Poland Stephen Mull.

The US military has launched a battery of the anti-missile complex Patriot near Warsaw. This took place in the framework of joint military exercises taking place during the invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

Poland has been a NATO member since 1999, but has no ballistic missile defense of its own, and in the coming weeks it is to choose a company that will deliver those weapons. American Patriots arrived in Poland accompanied by 100 US soldiers and about 30 units of transport. The system was deployed about 50 kilometers from Warsaw at a military base in Sochaczew.

“During these 16 years, we have always been standing with the United States. And when we needed its support, the US stood next to us. Many times I have emphasized this and I repeat it here in Sochaczew: Poland has a bad experience with respect to foreign soldiers. In the American soldiers we see friends and want their presence,” said Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Seminyak.

The Patriot Air and Missile Defense System is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at medium and high altitudes. Construction of a modern missile defense system in Eastern Europe causes a negative reaction from Moscow.
